The Deliciousness of Learning

Published by mwebb85 at 8:32 pm under College, jobs Edit This

First things first - the phones work! Hurray not having to run credit cards by hand! Of course it took all day for my manager to run the last two days’ worth of transactions through the server. But thank goodness that’s all over with.

Today a gentleman from the oil paint company Gamblin came to educate us. It was fascinating. I don’t know if any other arts companies send out there representatives to do this kind of thing, but I definitely would not mind staying late after work to learn about other stuff. He told us about color, how they get it from either natural or synthetic pigments, and why this matters, and what else goes into the paint, and what you can put in the paint to make it this quality or that quality, and on and on. I could have stayed there all night listening to him (amendment: had I had a place to sit other than the floor), but after an hour my coworkers were all learned out.

I had a couple of thoughts during this session. The first was that absolutely none of this information was covered during my oil painting class in college. Which is a real bummer, because I would have gotten a lot more out of it had I known these highly-important technical details. I at least would have had a better understanding of how to mix my colors.

My other thought was that I want his job. Work for a paint company all day? Sure! I always liked chemistry, after all.

Then I discovered that his day job is as a sales associate at Utrecht, our main art store rival and competitor. So, no.

But it did make me remember how much I love learning things and taking classes, how it gives me such a jolt to find out something new and understand it. And be able to apply it.

So now I just need to pick a subject to focus on (but there are so many!) and I’ll be ready to begin to continue my education.
